The Process of Commissioning a Portrait with Paula Baldocchi

When you decide to commission a portrait, you’re stepping into a creative journey that captures a meaningful moment, emotion, or essence—whether it’s for yourself, a loved one, or a special place that holds significance. As an artist, I am honored to help bring these moments to life. Here’s what you can expect when you commission a portrait with me, from our initial consultation to the final reveal.

1. Finding the Right Artist

First, you might explore different styles and see what resonates with you. Every artist brings a unique approach to their work, and you may find that my style—whether it’s my use of color, detail, or texture—aligns with your vision. I focus on capturing animals, people, botanicals, and homes, drawing on my love for vibrant storytelling through color and line. If my work speaks to you, I’d love to help bring your idea to life.

2. Starting with a Conversation

Once you’ve decided to work with me, we’ll begin with a conversation about your vision. This initial discussion is a time to share your ideas, ask questions, and get a sense of how the portrait will take shape. I love learning about the stories behind each commission, whether it’s a beloved pet, a cherished home, or a unique personal connection.

During this consultation, you might share reference photos, describe the atmosphere you envision, or let me know if there are specific details you want to highlight. This part of the process helps me understand your vision and allows us to align on what will make the portrait meaningful for you.

3. Working Out the Details

Portrait commissions have a few essential details we’ll discuss before I start:

• Size: What size will best suit your space or purpose?
• Medium: I work in various media, and each brings a unique texture and feel. Whether you envision oil, acrylic, or colored pencil, we’ll choose the one that best fits the mood you want for the portrait.
• Timeline: Depending on size and detail, portraits can take time to complete. If there’s a specific date by which you need the piece, let’s discuss that early.
• Cost: I’ll walk you through my pricing structure based on the size, complexity, and medium. We’ll go over payment options, including deposits and payment plans if needed.

4. The Creative Process Begins

Once everything is settled, I’ll start with preliminary sketches or drafts to give you an initial sense of the composition. This is one of my favorite parts, as it’s when the portrait begins to come to life. During this phase, you can provide feedback on major elements—like the pose, background, or key details.

Once we’re both happy with the initial draft, I dive into the final work, layering in colors, textures, and details that capture the spirit of your subject. This phase takes time and dedication, as I want every brushstroke to contribute to the feeling and story of the piece.

5. Watching the Piece Come to Life

With your feedback in mind, I move into the main creation process. Depending on our agreement, I may share occasional progress updates. Seeing a piece evolve is like watching a story unfold; each layer adds dimension, depth, and emotion.

For me, creating portraits is an act of care and devotion, especially knowing they carry so much meaning. Whether it’s the warmth in a pet’s eyes, the elegance of a favorite flower, or the charm of a beloved home, each element is carefully crafted to reflect what makes it unique.

6. Final Touches and Approval

Once the portrait is complete, I’ll share it with you for final approval. At this stage, you can request any small adjustments if needed. I want you to feel truly delighted with your portrait, so this step is an important one.

7. Delivery and Display

Finally, we arrange for delivery. If you’re in Chicago, you’re welcome to pick up the portrait in person, or I can carefully package and ship it to you. Seeing my work in your space, knowing it will be part of your life, is incredibly rewarding. I hope each time you see it, it brings you joy and meaning.

Tips for a Memorable Portrait Commission Experience

• Share Your Story: The more I know about the subject, the more I can capture its essence. Don’t be afraid to share the small details that make it special.
• Stay Open-Minded: Portraits are a collaboration, and often, the magic happens when you let the creative process unfold naturally.
• Trust the Vision: You chose me because something in my style resonated with you. Giving me the freedom to bring that vision to life usually results in the most powerful and authentic work.

Commissioning a portrait is a unique and personal journey, and it’s a privilege for me to be part of it. If you’re ready to begin or have any questions about the process, I’d be honored to work with you to create something truly special. Reach out to start the conversation—let’s bring your vision to life together.
